Why the Stick

The Talking Stick invites us to slow down and truly listen. Inspired by an ancient practice, it reminds us that communication isn’t only about speaking — it’s about giving space, attention, and presence to one another. Whoever holds the stick speaks from the heart; those without it, listen deeply.

Location

Step outside the known and into the wild. In the mountains, there are no walls and no routines. Out here, the rhythm is set by the elements. Nights by the fire and mornings in the cold remind you: when comfort falls away, life feels sharper, simpler, and more alive.

The journey begins in Rassa, a mountain village where time slows down. From there you walk to Alpe Selvaccia, a secluded valley that serves as your basecamp for the first two nights. Simple huts, a fire circle, and meadows under Monte Rosa welcome you. After grounding here, the group sets out deeper into the Alps. For three days and two nights, you carry only what you need, sleeping close to the land, cooking together, and following the rhythm of the trail. Basecamp and bivouac together form the arc of the expedition - from rooted stillness to raw immersion.

Activities

Every day offers a new balance: walking and resting, speaking and listening, ritual and play. Through sweat lodges, solo time, and nights under the stars, the expedition becomes more than a journey – it evolves into a lived practice of presence and connection.

Days begin with yoga, breathwork, or a refreshing dip in mountain water. Meals are simple and nourishing, prepared with local, organic produce – and one evening turns festive as you bake pizzas with our Italian hosts. A traditional sweat lodge offers depth, before the journey shifts: three days on the trail, carrying only what you need, cooking together, and sleeping in tarps or under the open sky. Guided by local experts, the rhythm of nature becomes both challenge and teacher.

FAQs

Every expedition raises questions — about gear, safety, experience, or simply what to expect. Our FAQ offers the essentials so you can step in prepared, yet leaving space for the unknown.

Do I need previous experience with hiking, yoga, or breathwork?

No previous experience is required. All activities during the expedition are guided with care and adapted to your level. Whether it’s hiking, yoga, or breathwork, you’ll be supported every step of the way. What matters is curiosity and a willingness to engage with the experience.

Do I need to be in good physical shape to join the expedition?

Our expeditions are designed for people with a basic level of fitness who enjoy being active outdoors. You don’t need to be an athlete – what matters most is an open mind and willingness to embrace the challenge. Each day of this mountain expedition balances movement, reflection, and rest, allowing everyone to go at their own pace.

How do travel arrangements and transport work?

Travel to and from the meeting point is arranged individually. We’ll share clear instructions, recommended travel options, and practical details once you sign up. Whenever possible, we help participants coordinate shared rides or travel together – the journey often begins before you even arrive.

How many people are in the group?

We keep our groups intentionally small – usually between 8 and 14 participants. This small-group format allows for personal attention, a sense of connection, and a safe, open atmosphere where everyone can share, reflect, and grow together.

Is the expedition suitable for people who come alone?

Absolutely. It’s very common for people to join solo, while others may come with a small group. From the first moment, you’ll be part of a supportive group where everyone shares the same sense of curiosity and openness. The journeys are designed to create connection – both with others and with yourself.

What is a sweat lodge ceremony, and what can I expect from it?

The sweat lodge is a traditional purification ritual with roots in various Indigenous cultures of North America. Guided safely by an experienced facilitator, participants sit in a heated, dome-shaped structure to release tension, reflect, and reconnect through heat, steam, and intention. The ceremony symbolizes cleansing and renewal – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Participation is always optional; each person decides for themselves whether to take part and to what extent.

What kind of weather can I expect during the expedition?

Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Days can be sunny and warm, while evenings often turn cool or misty. We recommend packing layers for flexibility and comfort on this mountain journey. Our guides monitor weather conditions closely to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing, whatever nature brings.

What should I bring with me on the expedition?

After registration, you’ll receive a detailed packing list for your hiking retreat. In general, bring comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for various weather conditions, sturdy hiking shoes, a reusable water bottle, and personal essentials. Layers, rain protection, and a small daypack are always useful in the mountains. We keep things simple – what you truly need is presence, curiosity, and a sense of adventure.

Which type of shoes or boots do you recommend?

Choose sturdy, broken-in hiking shoes or lightweight trekking boots with good ankle support and grip. Waterproof materials are ideal. Avoid brand-new shoes – comfort is key. For those familiar with the Dutch system: think of A/B or B-category hiking boots. If you’re unsure which type suits your expedition, feel free to reach out to us for advice.

Who are the facilitators, and what is their background?

Each OTRO expedition is guided by experienced facilitators who bring a rich mix of expertise in coaching, nature-based learning, and personal development. They create a safe, inspiring space where reflection, connection, and transformation can unfold naturally. You can meet our facilitators and read more about their backgrounds in the Tribe section on our website.
