Why the Stick

The Talking Stick invites us to slow down and truly listen. Inspired by an ancient practice, it reminds us that communication isn’t only about speaking — it’s about giving space, attention, and presence to one another. Whoever holds the stick speaks from the heart; those without it, listen deeply.

OTRO Hands-On

Together we build

OTRO Hands-On

Tired of thinking all week? Then come build with us. During this free weekend we roll up our sleeves, prepare Alpe Selvaccia for the season, and enjoy the Alps together. Work becomes play, effort becomes relaxation — a reset for body, mind, and spirit.

Location

We gather in Valsesia, a rugged alpine valley in northern Italy, where Alpe Selvaccia becomes our base. More than a backdrop, it is the place where we put our energy into building and repairing together. And when the tools are down, hikes, rivers, and starlit skies bring balance to the days.

Life at Alpe Selvaccia is simple yet rewarding. The huts are basic but comfortable, surrounded by forests and the vast Monte Rosa range rising above the valley. Days of effort are balanced with nourishing meals prepared by our Italian hosts, whose hospitality makes the place feel like home. Here, comfort isn’t found in luxury but in the essentials – fire, food, fresh air – and the camaraderie that grows when you build side by side.

Activities

The programme changes every year. We don’t know yet whether it’s fixing, sawing, lifting, or building — but we know it will be done together. OTRO Hands-On is about rolling up your sleeves, working with what’s needed, and enjoying the energy of creating side by side.

No two editions are the same. One year you might be raising the tipi, cutting wood, or sawing beams; another year you may help with bigger projects, like building a yoga deck or a pizza oven. The exact programme is only set just before the weekend. What stays constant is the spirit: practical, hands-on, and shared. Between work sessions there’s time to rest, walk, or enjoy a meal together. It’s less about the end result than about the experience of creating side by side, with nature as both setting and reward.

FAQs

Every expedition raises questions — about gear, safety, experience, or simply what to expect. Our FAQ offers the essentials so you can step in prepared, yet leaving space for the unknown.

How do travel arrangements and transport work?

Travel to and from the meeting point is arranged individually. We’ll share clear instructions, recommended travel options, and practical details once you sign up. Whenever possible, we help participants coordinate shared rides or travel together – the journey often begins before you even arrive.

What kind of weather can I expect during the expedition?

Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Days can be sunny and warm, while evenings often turn cool or misty. We recommend packing layers for flexibility and comfort on this mountain journey. Our guides monitor weather conditions closely to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing, whatever nature brings.

What should I bring with me on the expedition?

After registration, you’ll receive a detailed packing list for your hiking retreat. In general, bring comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for various weather conditions, sturdy hiking shoes, a reusable water bottle, and personal essentials. Layers, rain protection, and a small daypack are always useful in the mountains. We keep things simple – what you truly need is presence, curiosity, and a sense of adventure.

Which type of shoes or boots do you recommend?

Choose sturdy, broken-in hiking shoes or lightweight trekking boots with good ankle support and grip. Waterproof materials are ideal. Avoid brand-new shoes – comfort is key. For those familiar with the Dutch system: think of A/B or B-category hiking boots. If you’re unsure which type suits your expedition, feel free to reach out to us for advice.
